Sweden’s Ice Hotel
Experience your coolest journey in the winter wonderland at Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. In 1989, the world's first and largest ice hotel was built out of snow and ice and has been expanded to open year-round in 2016. It is a hotel and art exhibition made of ice from the River Torne. During the day, it hosts art exhibitions, and at night, it transforms the stunning hand-carved deluxe suites into guest-rooms with exclusive beds covered with reindeer hides.
Every year from December to April, approximately 40 artists from all around the world give the winter hotel a fresh look. After the winter hotel has melted back into the river in the spring, Icehotel 365 remains with 18 unique art suites allowing guests can experience the magnificent hotel made of ice and snow throughout the year.
Although all rooms of Icehotel Winter and Icehotel 365 are made of snow and ice, the temperature is kept between -5 and -8 degrees Celsius. All guests staying in the Ice Rooms or Art Suites in both hotels have access to the warm storage and facilities, which include shared bathroom, sauna and shower area. Overnight guests will be fine with just a thermal sleeping bag, hat, warm socks, and a mid-layer jumper to get a good night's sleep. Meanwhile, there are additional cozy options for staying under duvets available between traditional hotel rooms or chalets.
The Ice Ceremony Hall which has a brand-new design each year provides a unique venue for couples to hold an unusual wedding from December until April before it melts back into the river. Despite the winter wedding idea, couples may consider getting married here between May and early August, when the Midnight Sun ensures 24-hour daylight. In late August and September, a wedding ceremony can be hosted under the most romantic setting, with the landscape that transformed into a cascade of red and orange, and the northern lights reappearing while the nights get darker.
Icehotel Jukkasjärvi originated the ice bar concept, which has now grown into an international franchise business with locations in major cities. All decorations, furnishings, art, and drinking glasses in Icebar are made entirely of natural ice harvested from the Torne River. The cocktails are served on the rocks, and Champagne served in handcrafted ice glasses.
